How to Find a Great Guitar Teacher

Friday, July 17th, 2009

guitar teacher

If you want to learn how to play guitar with a guitar teacher keep in mind to choose a good teacher, it’s not all about how your guitar teacher plays, it’s about how he teaches.

I knew great guitar players who didn’t know how to teach guitar, they are great guitar players but you can’t learn anything from them.

There are teachers who just gives you a lot of boring exercises and they let you on your own, that’s not teaching… Great guitar teachers will guide you preparing exercises for your needs.

When i started to play guitar i sucked at tempo and none of my previous teachers corrected that but then my first “real” guitar teacher who still being a good friend of mine prepared fun exercises to improve my tempo skills and believe me, i learned in a few classes what i couldn’t master with months and months with bad guitar teachers.

If you’re just starting to learn how to play guitar ask your friends and people who you know that play guitar about which teacher helped them most, don’t lose time and money with bad guitar teachers!

That kind of teachers will just discourage you because you may think that you are the problem, don’t let somebody discourage you and make you lose time… find someone who will encourage to improve your skills and will guide your through your guitar learning journey.

Maybe you’re not looking for a teacher and want to learn guitar by yourself, then i will recommend you to read our article about Online Guitar Lessons.

Guitar Learning Commandments

Guitar Learning Commandments

I found this commandments in Dan’s Guitar Learning Journal and if you’re just starting with guitar you need to know about this stuff to avoid problems and even guitar playing diseases

15 Commandments of Learning How to Play Guitar

1) Some fingertip and wrist pain is normal and it will disappear over time, but is you feel a sharp pain stop playing and rest a while. If the pain doesn’t disappear go see a doctor! Don’t play if it hurts, you can get tendinitis, tennis elbow or other crappy problems.

2) Using the right technique will prevent you from painful situations, keep your fret hand close to the fretboard, keep your fingers close to each other and cupped when fretting notes and chords, wrist down and keep your thumb right in the neck of the guitar.

3) Warm up your hands and wrists before start to play and do some chromatic exercises when you pick your guitar

4) Wash your hands before picking up your guitar, hand’s oil and dirt residues makes your guitar strings to get rust.

5) Keep the fingernails of your fret hand shortened; else they will interfere with your fretting of notes.

6) Clean your guitar’s neck and fretboard after playing.

7) Don’t get discouraged if you can’t play some chords, arpeggios or riffs, practice makes perfect.

8 ) If you play faster than you really can you’re just slowing your learning process, timing, rhythm and accuracy are far more important than speed.

9) Develop a learning plan and schedule and stick to it until you master it.

10) Play with other musicians every time you can do it, you can learn a lot of everything (technique, theory, etc) when you jam with other people.

11) Try to use always the proper fingering when playing scales and chords, this will help you a lot with more advanced techniques and with Lead Guitar.

12) Make sure the volume of your up-strokes and down strokes are equal, otherwise your rhythm will be lop sided.

13) Develop your ear, that’s the most important thing for a musician. Try to learn riffs just by hearing them.

14) Learn some theory, how to read music and stuff like that, it’ll help you a lot.

15) Have fun! when you feel stuck or bored, start playing whatever comes to your mind and just enjoy your guitar… that’s why we play guitar, to have a great time.

Keep this things in mind and you’ll learn a lot! Hope this helps you in your guitar learning process.

Go From Guitar Hero Game to Real Guitar Hero!

From Guitar Gero to Real Guitar Hero

From Guitar Hero to Real Guitar Hero

I have read a lot of stuff about people supporting Guitar Hero and people talking shit about it.

I don’t know why people argue so much, it’s a game and it’s goddamn funny, you can play it for hours and have a great time with your friends, that’s what videogames are for.

Its true that Guitar Hero won’t help you to become a “Real Guitar God”, but games like Guitar Hero makes you feel that feeling that only musicians know, and if playing a plastic guitar feels great… imagine how it would feel to play a real guitar like that!

Years ago i played a computer game called Frets On Fire, i played that game a lot and believe it or not it helped me to become a better guitarist… not because by playing the game my “real” guitar skills improved but it helped me because i wanted to learn how to play everything i played in the game in my real guitar, that game kept me motivated to go through boring guitar exercises and stuff like that cause i wanted to be able to play my favorite songs.

Music games can also help you to get some music culture, in games like Guitar Hero, Rock Band, Frets On Fire, etc you go through different music styles, genres and ages from classic rock bands to modern ones, from Pop to Metal… and that’s awesome! as a guitarist and musician you have to know a lot about different genres and musical eras, general culture is always great for any kind of artist.

If you play Guitar Hero but don’t play real guitar give it a chance and learn how to play guitar with online guitar lessons or with a guitar teacher … playing a videogame with friends it’s great and i like it a lot, but the feeling of playing a wood and steel guitar for your friends and your audience is unbeatable.

Are online guitar lessons for you?

If you love music... play it!

If you love music... play it!

How to know if online guitar lessons are for you? In this post i explain the pros and cons of taking “normal” guitar lessons and online guitar lessons.

Its always great to have a real teacher with you, usually they become friends cause you both have the same passion… the guitar.

Pros:
- With normal guitar lessons you’ll make friends and play with other people, talk about guitars and share experience… that’s great!

- If you have a question, you can just ask the teacher and have a real time answer.

- If you feel stuck with something in particular (tapping, sweep picking) your teacher can tell you what he did to get through it.

But like everything, there are always some Cons.

Cons:
- Guitar lessons with a teacher use to be expensive, for something like 3 hours of lessons with a teacher you can have online guitar lessons for a whole year.

- Maybe you don’t have the time to take lessons in a music school, its really hard to take lessons with a teacher if you have a full time job or want to spend more time with your girlfriend, children or whatever. With online guitar lessons you can study and practice in your home at any time.

- If you have bad luck (like i had) your teachers can be assholes and teach you in a wrong way making you lose time and money… and that sucks. If you’re just beginning its hard to tell if a teacher will be great for you before some months, then its easier to realize that kind of stuff but i lose a lot of time and money in bad teachers in my beginnings.

Now lets talk about Online guitar lessons, they have Pros and Cons too. Nowadays there are some great courses in the market so if you can’t have lessons with a teacher check them!

Pros:
- They’re really cheap and you can have lessons for a whole year (or even more) for less than just a few hours with a teacher.

- You can practice and study anywhere at any time, they’re ideal if you have a full time job or want to spend the day with friends, girlfriend/boyfriend, children or your family.

- Some of them like Unlock the Guitar are really great learning systems, you can learn how to play scales, chords and other techniques by playing cool classic and modern rock songs, making the learning process something fun is a MUST cause you’ll be practicing for a long time and if the lessons are boring you won’t be motivated to continue.

Now lets check the Cons.

Cons:

- If you learn just in your home you won’t be in contact with other musicians, this isn’t a real problem if you already have friends that play guitar, bass, drums or whatever.

- You can’t ask anybody for more info, but then again this is fixed if you have musician friends or if you ask in forums… its all about to get in contact with the people who know about this.

Remember this, it doesn’t really matters if you take traditional guitar lessons with a real teacher or if you take an online course, there is something more important than that… and that’s YOU.

You NEED to be committed with your instrument, it doesn’t matter if you have the best teacher in the world or if you downloaded the best guitar course of the whole Internet, they can’t play guitar for you… if you really want to play guitar and if you’re really committed in your learning process you’ll learn in a fly.

Playing guitar is an awesome thing and it feels great to learn more and become a better player, you don’t need to be a guitar god to enjoy guitar like them… if you start playing you won’t be disappointed.
